He's quite an artist and he's full of good thoughts.
I said I doubt myself sometimes because there are so many people who are better than me.
Then he said, " Regardless of whether you're a student or a full on pro, there will always be someone better. Art isn't about being better, it's about being You. Design to express, not impress!"
I swear that's probably the best thing I've heard since I've entered the fashion industry. And this is coming from someone who's a DJ. He's definitely not a fashion person, but a style person :) (read my previous blog I am Style, I am not Fashion).
Our biggest enemies are usually ourselves.
There are so many people out there doing outstanding, over the top designs, but simple is harder to express and make it become a wow factor. Sure, the newly designed dress is an intelligent creation, creating new patterns, etc. must be really hard. It takes a highly creative person to be able to create such garment. But at the same time when people are appreciating such great designs, there are also people who appreciates simple street styles. The same pattern of the same t-shirts have been used over and over again, its simple, its the easiest pattern i've come across, it's never over the top, it's just got a bit of screen printing here and there, yet it sells, and EVERYONE wears it. It's popular world wide and what does a simple t-shirt have that makes it so popular? Designers don't put designs on it. They put a little perspective, and they put style.
I like to keep it simple, not boring, but simple enough. People with the best styles are the ones who rocks the simplest designs, and makes an the impression. Simple means, you are comfortable with the vision you have that you don't need to feel you have to go over the top to make an impression. To be able to design a simple garment that rocks every outfit you wear, is a gift.
