I can't believe I woke up at 5.30 this morning and got on the 6.44 bus to the city, caught the 7.24 train, and got to uni at 7.45 to be exact. And my class doesn't start until 8.30. The reason being that I haven't finished the sleeves pattern for my jacket. Luckily we have the entire class to finish it up.
I was in a such a good mood because I had a very interesting random chit chats with my friends and made up my mind to skip my afternoon class - Sustainability. But we heard that we got a guest coming in today so I decided to stay - bummer.
Anyhow, we had a little interesting workshop going on. It was a very interesting work shop, I'd say, as our today's focus is on a simple little world called Empathy.
We had to take out a piece of something we were wearing and put it on the table. Then we start picking up other people's random piece of clothing they put on their table and wear it. Mostly jackets. We then had a moment to ourselves to really starting to feel like we own that garment by looking that our own reflection wearing it. The purpose of this exercise is to feel Empathy. Put ourselves in that owner's shoe - trying to understand where she is coming from, what would be the reason or story behind this particular piece of garment she chose to wear, what kind of person she would be, what kind of personality does she have, and most importantly; how it makes her feel. We then got into pairs and tell the person next to us how does wearing this garment made us feel. The person we told to will present to the class.
Then we got into a deep discussion of understanding what it means to be a designer. What message are we delivering? How does it make our customers feel? What do they need to feel? - Would that be the reason why they chose a particular garment on them?
Some people starts talking about their emotional connections with pieces of clothing they choose to buy along with their values and point of views. A girl spoke about her jacket that looked pretty formal and has lots of buttons. She explains that she realizes how she often gets attracted to clothing with lots of buttons and its mainly because it reminds her of her father who passed away many years ago. He was a marine and often wore uniforms (with lots of buttons of course). So a deep story right there.
People think we're vain, but what they don't understand is that people who long to become designers are people who wants to express different things about themselves. They want to deliver a message, like every artists. There is a story, a reason behind why they do what they do. The vain ones, are not us, but those who are too quick to judge and too closed minded to understand.
We judge the way you dress because we know it tells us exactly what kind of person you are.
And our judgements are almost always right.
